First wave, first lesson. That's the promise.
Beginner surf lessons on Maui's friendliest breaks. Small groups, patient teaching, soft-top longboards, and an instructor in the water next to you the whole time.
Two hours in the water · boards and reef shoes included · meet at The Cove, Kihei
Most schools promise a fun morning. We promise a moment: the first time the board catches, the noise stops, and you're standing on the ocean.
That moment usually happens in the first hour. If a full lesson goes by and you never stand, the next one is on us. Simple as that.
Three ways to paddle out
Every lesson is two hours: a short beach talk, then straight into the water. Boards, rash guards, and reef shoes included.
Group lesson
Max 4 surfers per instructor
The classic first lesson. Small enough that everyone gets pushed into waves, social enough that the wipeouts are half the fun.

- Daily at 8am and 11am, The Cove
- Photos by your instructor, included

Book this lessonWhere we paddle out
We pick the break each morning based on the swell, so beginners always get the gentlest water on the island.
The Cove
Kalama Park, Kihei · our home break
Slow, rolling whitewater over sand. This is where first waves happen: it's where almost every Maui surfer you'll ever meet stood up for the first time.
Launiupoko
West side, past Olowalu · for lesson two and beyond
A long, gentle left over reef with a sandy keiki pool beside it. Where we take families and second-lesson surfers chasing their first green-face wave.
Thousand Peaks
Ukumehame · when the south swell fills in
Peak after peak of soft shoulders with nobody fighting for them. Room to make mistakes, which is exactly what learning needs.
Taught by people who learned right here
First Light is run by Kihei locals who grew up surfing The Cove before school. We teach the way we were taught: in the water next to you, not shouting from the sand. Lifeguard-certified, ocean-safety trained, and honest about conditions: if the water isn't right for beginners, we reschedule instead of selling you a bad morning.
Fictional demo note: a real build would put the owner's name, face, and certifications right here, photographed in the water at golden hour.
Tomorrow morning, you could be standing on the ocean.
Lessons run every morning at 8 and 11. Book today, and check the surf report together with your instructor the night before.
